Walis , also called Walif , Valif , Valise and earlier Gilbertinsel , is an island in the Bismarck Sea , located 18 km off the northeast coast of the island of New Guinea near the coastal town of Dagua . The smaller neighboring island of Tarawai is about 500 m to the northwest . The people of the island of Walis live in three villages and, like the people of Tarawai, speak an Ndu language.
The densely forested and sparsely populated island of Walis belongs to the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea . The island has insignificant hills. Yams, taro, sugar cane and sweet potatoes are grown in Welsh.
