The Würzburg ramparts are believed to be a castle stable on the Würzburg, about five kilometers north of Wiesbaden , on the southern slopes of the Taunus ridge . Whether a rampart existed here is disputed.

Machined stones that suggest masonry

Geographical location

With a height of 399  m , the densely forested Würzburg is a secondary peak in front of the Taunus main ridge around 1000 meters south. To the west and south it drops steeply to the Rabengrund 800 meters away and to the east 1000 meters to the Goldstein Valley. Only to the north is there a flat transition in the direction of the Jagdschloss Platte . About 300 meters east of the summit, Idsteiner Strasse , an old pass road, ran to the Trompeterweg .

Exploration and description

In 1879 Karl August von Cohausen documented a stone wall about 0.1 meters high, oval in shape and 40 meters by 24 meters. He also initiated wall cuts, but made no discoveries.

In 1905 H. Behlen could no longer find a wall. It is therefore controversial whether there was ever a fortification here. It should be noted that on the summit of the Würzburg there are many worked stones that indicate masonry.

Monument protection

The area of the ramparts is a ground monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act . Investigations and targeted collection of finds are subject to approval, and accidental finds are reported to the monument authorities.
