Wiesbaden became the capital of the Duchy of Nassau in 1806 . The Counts of Nassau-Weilburg had already resided in Biebrich Castle on the Rhine since 1741 . Wilhelm von Nassau-Weilburg became Duke after the death of Duke Friedrich August in 1816 and the associated extinction of the Nassau-Usingen line. In 1823 he commissioned the court architect Friedrich Ludwig Schrumpf to build a hunting lodge in the Taunus forests northwest of the city. The building was built on the so-called plate , a 500 meter high elevation of the Taunus ridge. As a result, the castle was mainly used in the summer months, numerous prominent guests were here, including the Russian Tsar Alexander II , Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna and Empress Eugénie of France . After the construction of the Wiesbaden City Palace and the death of Wilhelm, the palace was continued to be used by his son Adolf , before Nassau was annexed by Prussia after the defeat in the Austro-Prussian War in 1866 and the Duke was removed from office. However, the Platte hunting lodge remained in Adolf's possession, and when he became Grand Duke of Luxembourg in 1890 , it became the property of the State of Luxembourg. After Adolf died in 1905, Luxemburg sold it to the city of Wiesbaden for 400,000 gold marks in 1913.

During the Second World War , an air defense control center was housed in the strategically located castle high above Wiesbaden, which was the fate of the building on the night of February 2 to 3, 1945: an attack by the British Air Force almost completely destroyed it, only the outer walls remained stand.

The ruins fell into disrepair in the years that followed. It was not until 1987 that an initiative took place, today's Stiftung Jagdschloss Platte e. V. , of the castle and made it usable again. The first securing work on the ruins began in 1989. From 1993 it could be used for weddings, parties and other events. The aim of the foundation was to completely rebuild the castle with the help of donations. In 2003 a modern glass roof was erected, which cantilevers over the building and cites the historical forms. In autumn 2006 the interior was expanded further. The building has been available for events again since April 2007.

architecture

The Jagdschloss Platte was built in the classical style. It had a square floor plan, a clear cubic shape and four restrained front sides, each adorned by a central projectile with a flat gable . On the south side, the central projection was emphasized by Ionic columns. On the roof in the form of a truncated pyramid there was a viewing platform from which one could see the Wiesbaden basin and the Rhine plain. Today a staircase leads to a bridge running along the roof ridge, which leads from the north end of the building to the south end. In addition to a good overview of the inside of the building, there is a good vantage point of the city of Wiesbaden at the south end. For static reasons, no more than 30 people should be on the bridge.

Inside the central staircase was arranged, the two-flight spiral staircase of which was spanned by a dome modeled on the Roman pantheon . The 54 rooms on three levels are grouped around this staircase. The rooms were splendidly furnished; the Duke's reception room consisted of all furniture made of deer antlers.

Until 1913, the main entrance was flanked by two bronze deer made by the sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch . When the palace was sold, the two sculptures first came to Hohenburg Palace and, in 1953, were placed in the entrance of Fischbach Palace , Grand Duke Jean's retirement home , in Luxembourg because of its sale . At the end of 2007, at the instigation of the Jagdschloss Platte Foundation , the two sculptures could be returned as copies. The Nassau house in Luxembourg is providing 27,000 euros as a basic amount, with a further 50,000 euros financed by donors and sponsors. On August 6, 2010 the copies of the two bronze deer made by the art foundry Plein in Speicher (Eifel) were unveiled.
