The church

The pilgrimage church of Novareia ( Italian Santuario della Novareia ) is a sacred building , which is consecrated to the Gracious Madonna . It is located at the entrance to the Valsessera valley in the municipality of Portula at an altitude of approx. 750 m, surrounded by forests.

history

The pilgrimage site was built on the site where an older woman, Antonina Cravetta, is said to have had an apparition of Mary around 1650 . When she appeared, the Virgin is said to have asked that a church be built. However, initially only a small chapel was built from branches and foliage.

The current building was built after an alleged second apparition, which Giacomo di Michel had in 1712 and which was accompanied by a miraculous healing. The 18th century church contains a wooden altar by Aurelio Deadlines and was completed during the 19th century. In front of the simple and elegant gable facade is an extensive portico , which is used as a resting place for the pilgrims. A statue in honor of the Virgin was placed in the square in front of the church.

The Sanctuary of Novareia can be reached by car on a 3.5 km dirt road from the Castagnea hamlet, but it is usually reached on foot. It is one of the places of worship that are of historical, art-historical and religious interest on the two hiking trails CoEUR and Path of San Carlo .
