Count Walram von Jülich († 1297 ) was Count of the County of Jülich from 1278 until his death .

He should not be confused with the Archbishop of Cologne, Walram von Jülich († 1349).

Life

Walram was the second son of Count Wilhelm IV. Von Jülich and Ricarda von Geldern, a daughter of Count Gerhard IV. Walram was the younger son intended for a spiritual career and provost at the Marienstift in Aachen . However, when his father and older brother Wilhelm were slain together in 1278, he was heir to the county.

Walram was a bitter opponent of the Archbishops of Cologne and partisans of the Duke of Brabant and other Westphalian greats in the Limburg succession dispute . In the Battle of Worringen in 1288 he captured Archbishop Siegfried , thus finally securing supremacy over the archbishops , including Zülpich and securing all other fiefs. He led many typical feuds with neighbors.

progeny

Walram married Maria von Brabant, daughter of Gottfried von Aerschot , in 1296 . They had a son Wilhelm. However, the county's inheritance fell to Walram's younger brother, Gerhard .
