The Walter Gropius School ( WGS ) is a community school in the Gropiusstadt district of the Berlin district of Neukölln . It is named after the architect Walter Gropius and was the first comprehensive school in the Federal Republic of Germany when it was founded in 1968 .

history

The planning of a school with a "special pedagogical character" for the new settlement area Britz - Buckow - Rudow began in the early 1960s with significant support from the then state school supervisor Carl-Heinz Evers . The school was built according to the designs of its namesake and opened on April 19, 1968 as a comprehensive school with upper secondary school under the name of the comprehensive school Britz-Buckow-Rudow . The school was part of the overall concept of Gropiusstadt , which provided for living with light, air and sun as well as an infrastructural expansion with kindergartens, schools, shopping centers and parking lots. Due to the close development of Gropiusstadt, high school numbers were expected.

Since the opening, the demand for school places has always exceeded the school's capacity. The first Abitur exams were held in 1971. As the first comprehensive school in Germany, it served as a model for many other schools after Evers, one of the fathers of the comprehensive schools, had described it as the “mother monastery of the comprehensive schools”.

Today the WGS is a community school consisting of elementary , intermediate and upper level , which means that pupils can be taught from the first grade up to and including the Abitur. It is one of the largest general education schools in the Neukölln district.

Building and structure

The school buildings are built in a pavilion style.

The basic level (grades one to six) is housed in the three two-story buildings. The middle and upper grades are located in the two three-story buildings. The main building in between separates the basic level from the intermediate and upper levels. This is where the teachers' room, administration and specialist rooms are housed. The pavilions are connected to each other and to the main building by corridors that used to be partially glazed and are now fully glazed.

There are large sports and playgrounds, a workshop and a library on the school grounds. Since the school lacks an auditorium , ceremonies such as the awarding of the Abitur certificates were previously held in a small sports hall on the school premises; today they take place in the Gropiusstadt community center.

classes

Since the founding of the WGS, lessons have taken place from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm; Friday is shortened.
