Walter Deuss

Walter Deuss (born May 1, 1935 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German manager.

Deuss studied law in Cologne and Bonn from 1956 to 1960. He has been a member of the Corps Palatia Bonn since 1957 .

He was a member of the Karstadt board of directors from 1967 and from 1982 first board spokesman and later chairman of the board of the department store group Karstadt AG . In 1976/77 he was just as much involved in the takeover of Neckermann by the Karstadt Group as in 1994 in the takeover of competitor Hertie and in 1999 in the merger of Karstadt and Quelle to form KarstadtQuelle AG.

He was CEO of the KarstadtQuelle Group until September 2000 and then retired after criticizing his management. He still appears publicly today as a member of the Presidium of the Retail Association BAG ( Federal Working Group of Medium-sized and Large Retail Enterprises ).

In 2005 Deuss sued his former employer. Deuss had contractually assured that even after his departure he would be entitled to an appropriate company car and driver for the rest of his life. In the course of the tough austerity measures at Karstadt, the group also demanded concessions from its former managers. Some responded to this and waived official cars and similar privileges. At Deuss, the only thing that was important was that Karstadt no longer wanted to pay the driver's overtime. Deuss complained against it and was right in February 2006. In the press, however, he was portrayed as an unscrupulous "Raffke boss" (Bild-Zeitung) for this lawsuit.
