The retail association Federal Association of Medium and Large-scale retail e. V. (BAG) represented medium-sized and large companies in the German retail sector until December 2009, particularly in the textile retail sector .

It was founded on September 19, 1949 in Assmannshausen as a professional , business and employer association . Most members were working in an urban environment, including purchase and department stores and mid-sized retailers. Overall, the association represented around 10% of the branch turnover in the retail trade in Germany. The members included a. KarstadtQuelle , Douglas , Woolworth , engelhorn KGaA , Peek & Cloppenburg and Katag AG, until 1999 also Kaufhof . The last president of the BAG was Helmut Merkel , former Karstadt -Warenhaus-Chef, previously Lovro Mandac , CEO of Kaufhof Warenhaus AG and Walter Deuss , then CEO of Karstadt Warenhaus AG. The last managing director was Rolf Pangels , who succeeded Johann Hellwege .

The association was founded by the regional working groups of medium-sized and large companies that existed in the former West German federal states. In the 1970s and 1980s it was based at Lindenallee 70 in the Marienburg district of Cologne . After German reunification , the BAG initially set up an office in Leipzig, later regional associations and working groups were also formed in the eastern German states.

A merger with the German Retail Association (HDE) was originally planned. However, as a result of the insolvency of Karstadt Warenhaus GmbH, BAG ceased operations on December 9, 2009. The association continues to exist in liquidation with considerable assets, which now serve to balance and secure the pension obligations. The liquidator is the former managing director of the Berlin-Brandenburg regional association, Nils Busch-Petersen .

According to its own statements, the German trade association intends to "give a home" to the large member companies of the BAG, which will cease its activities as a federal association at the end of the year. The large member companies of the BAG have already declared their membership in the new HDE. Most of the medium-sized BAG companies already belong to the HDE and its state and regional associations.
