Villa Lindenallee 70 (2011)

The Lindenallee 70 building is a villa in the Marienburg district of Cologne , which was built in 1924/25 and belongs to the Cologne-Marienburg villa colony . It is located in the south of the district on the eastern edge of Schillingsrotter Platz. The villa stands as a monument under monument protection .

history

The villa was built for the client Anton Paul Brüning (1881–1944), branch director of Deutsche Bank in Cologne, based on a design by the Swiss architect Emil Felix . During the construction period (1924/25), he was also responsible for the planning of three more buildings on Lindenallee and had already implemented a number of construction projects for Deutsche Bank. The construction of the villa cost 600,000 Reichsmarks up to 1926 and the interior decoration, which took place from 1926 to 1929, took up a further 330,000 Reichsmarks, which Brüning raised through funds embezzled by him in his function as bank director . During the Nazi era , the property was empty until 1938. This year, under a new owner, Felix Brenninkmeyer, renovations were carried out according to plans by the Marienburg-based architect Paul Pott . They also included a redesign of the dining room .

The villa remained undamaged during the Second World War . Towards the end of the war it was confiscated by the American occupation forces and was available as a residence for the military governor of Cologne, Lieutenant Colonel John K. Patterson, during the short period of the American military government (March – June 1945). After Bonn had become the seat of government of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949 , the villa served as the residence of the embassy from 1952 at the latest , the residence of the ambassador of Canada . It was based at this location until at least 1967 and was then moved to Bonn. One of the subsequent users of the villa was the Federal Association of Medium-sized and Large Retail Enterprises , which had its headquarters here from 1975 to at least 1986 at the latest. The entry of the villa in the list of monuments of the city of Cologne took place on November 5, 1992. At that time it housed a federal agency.

In 2004, after years of vacancy, the property was still owned by the Federal Property Office , which again advertised it for sale this year. After this was done, the villa was extensively renovated by 2007 at the latest under the direction of the architect Thomas Kostulski. It has been preserved in a largely unchanged state, also inside.

architecture

The villa consists of a manor house facing Schillingsrotter Platz with side projections and a wing attached to the avenue of lime trees, which includes a garage and chauffeur's house. Although it appears "in the style of conservative modernism", like numerous other buildings designed by Emil Felix, it is based on the model of the Lower Rhine and Westphalian building tradition. The interior design is much more splendid than the exterior, it includes a living room with a wooden ceiling and a stone fireplace, a richly stuccoed dining room and a wooden staircase hall. The garden area belonging to the villa, which is relatively small due to the small size of the property, is surrounded by an arcade . The fencing of the plot takes place on the street side by a high wall, into a round pavilion is integrated.

"Compared to the very uniform, strict and rather reserved exterior of the house, the interior is picturesque, splendid and almost castle-like, as if elements had been added and redesigned here over centuries from the Renaissance to Classicism."
