Helmut Merkel (* 1949 in Achern , Baden ) is a German manager, consultant and entrepreneur.

Education

Helmut Merkel completed a degree in business administration with a degree in business administration from the University of Mannheim . The main focus of the course was: logistics , industrial management and computer science . The doctorate (Dr. rer. Pol.) On the topic: Simulation models for the optimization of interdependent logistic processes took place at the University of Mannheim .

job

From 1980 he worked for the company ADV / ORGA AG in Wilhelmshaven . In 1986 he became a member of the board of ADV / ORGA AG. In 1989, Helmut Merkel became CEO of DAT AG in Ratingen . From 1993 to 1997 he was also a member of the management of the Deichmann trading group in Essen . In April 2000, Helmut Merkel was appointed member of the board for logistics , IT at KarstadtQuelle AG (later renamed: Arcandor AG ). From 2002 as Personnel Director on the board.

From 2003 Helmut Merkel was chairman of the board of Karstadt Warenhaus AG (later transformed into Karstadt Warenhaus GmbH). In his role as CEO, he was responsible for the areas of human resources, administration and sales as well as marketing, gastronomy and travel. For KarstadtQuelle AG he continued to be responsible for logistics, IT and until 2005 as HR director.

In August 2006, Helmut Merkel handed over the chairmanship of Karstadt Warenhaus AG to Peter Wolf. In the course of this, he took over the areas of social policy , purchasing coordination and procurement , logistics and information technology as a simple member of the board of KarstadtQuelle AG .

Arcandor

After the bankruptcy of Arcandor AG in September 2009, the responsible insolvency administrator opened a civil suit against organs and former organs of the group. Helmut Merkel was involved in two proceedings. The charge against him to have received "unjustified bonuses" was rejected in the first instance by the Essen district court . The proceedings are currently pending in the second instance at the Hamm Higher Regional Court. The second procedure, in which it concerns claims for damages against organs for five property sales, is pending in the second instance at the higher regional court.

Entrepreneurship

After leaving Deichmann Handelsgruppe in 1997, Helmut Merkel built up the consulting company IM + C AG with a focus on trade and IT based in Mannheim. Together with a partner, he founded a 4-PL logistics company in Cologne. When he was appointed to the board of KarstadtQuelle AG in 2000, partners continued to run the company on a fiduciary basis. After leaving the Arcandor Group in 2008, he returned to self-employment and supported his son in setting up the trading company EURASIA based in Hong Kong .

Institutional activities

From 2004, Helmut Merkel held the functions of the supervisory board chairman of GS1 Germany . From 2004 to 2009 he was President of the Federal Working Group for Medium and Large Enterprises in the Retail Trade e. V. and during the same period a member of the Presidium of the Federation of German Employers' Associations. From 2006 to 2009 Helmut Merkel was Vice President of the Main Association of German Retailers . From 2007 to 2009 President of the International Group of Department Stores based in Zurich .

Teaching

From 1987, Helmut Merkel was a lecturer in logistics at the University of Mannheim. In 1990 he was appointed honorary professor for logistics management systems. Teaching was discontinued in 2014.
