Walter Freiwald (* 1907 in Marburg an der Lahn ; † 1997 ) was a German architect and Hessian construction clerk , stylistically his most important works belong to the functionalism of post-war modernism .

Freiwald was one of the initiators of the re-establishment of the Association of German Architects (BDA) in 1949 , he maintained personal contact with Marburg intellectuals and writers of his time such as José Ortega y Gasset and Richard Hamann . Freiwald was not politically positioned. In Marburg itself, he designed the student house with cafeteria in 1962. His most famous design is the regional council in Kassel. His building of the former federal debt administration in Bad Homburg is a listed building.

As a government building officer, he oversaw building measures for the state of Hesse that were carried out by local architects, such as the multi-purpose hall of the Breitscheid community.
