Walter H. Barkas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Walter H. Barkas (* 1912 in Portland (Oregon) ; † March 28, 1969 ) was an American physicist and from 1965 Professor of Physics at the University of California, Riverside . He was a specialist in the use of core emulsions ; H. Photo plates with a thick, sensitive layer, for particle physics purposes .

Together with colleagues, he discovered the difference in the range between positive and negative mesons with the same initial energy and attributed this to the difference in the braking power between positively and negatively charged particles. This difference is therefore called the Barkas effect or Barkas-Andersen effect , see Bethe formula .

In 1941 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society .
