Walter H. Schaad (born December 7, 1902 in Stein am Rhein ; † February 28, 1990 in Lucerne ) was a Swiss architect .

Education and career

After graduating from the canton school in Schaffhausen and beginning an apprenticeship as a bricklayer, Schaad began studying architecture at the ETH Zurich in 1921 , where he graduated from Karl Moser in 1926 . He worked for a short time in Zurich before going on a long study trip to Italy with his former fellow student Ernst Schindler . In 1926/27 he worked for Le Corbusier in Paris, who was taking part in the competition for the Palace of Nations in Geneva. Back in Zurich, he worked for Moser from 1928, where he worked at the post office in Baden. In 1930 he moved to Lucerne, where he was involved in the planning of the Dulaschulhaus with Albert Zeyer , another representative of New Building . From 1932 on, Schaad was the technical director of the Vallaster construction business in Lucerne. An additional course of study at the ETH in earthwork mechanics and business administration, which, according to the architects' lexicon, he is said to have started at the ETH in 1936, could refer to a younger colleague of the same name.

In 1937, after winning the competition for the parish hall of Meggen, he was able to set up his own office and entered into a partnership with Ernst Leuenberger until 1942. He entered into another collaboration with Emil Jauch from 1949 to 1954 , the two of them wrote eight national and international competitions together, and also won three, of which only the Matt schoolhouse in Hergiswil was realized, which can certainly be called Schaad's main work. As one of the first representatives of post-war modernist school building forms, this schoolhouse was a prototype for the subsequent buildings, in which special attention was paid to good lighting, approximately square floor plans, decentralized access and low number of floors.
