Walter J. Mathews

Walter J. Mathews (born  May 2, 1850 in Markesan , Wisconsin , †  November 20, 1947 in Oakland , California ) was an American architect from Oakland , California. Its most famous buildings are the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles and the First Unitarian Church of Oakland .

His father, Julius C. Mathews , was also an architect. The Mathews family moved from Wisconsin to California in 1866 , and Walter studied architecture with his brothers in his father's office. In 1886 Walter J. Mathews began working independently in Oakland. His projects were typical of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was professionally active in Oakland until at least 1940.
