Walter Kröhnke (born June 13, 1903 in Hamburg , † 1944 in Russia or missing) was a German visual artist .

Life

Kröhnke was the son of a chemistry professor and came to Berlin with his family at the age of two . From 1922 to 1926 he studied at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin, first with Spiegel and later with Karl Hofer . The course was followed by a study visit to Sanary from 1927 to 1932 and five years in Paris as well as trips to Italy and Spain. In 1933 Kröhnke married the painter Louise Rösler . In 1940 their daughter Anka Kröhnke was born.

During the time of National Socialism he tried to earn a living as a photographer, later also as a portrait painter. In 1936 there was another solo exhibition at the Feldhäusser and Fritze gallery in Berlin; however, the gallery was closed soon after.

In 1939 Kröhnke was drafted into the Wehrmacht . He took part in the Norwegian campaign in 1940 and then remained stationed in Norway until the end of 1943. Then he was transferred to the Eastern Front in Russia and has been missing there since 1944.

In 1943, his studio in Berlin was destroyed in a bomb attack, with many paintings and drawings being lost. Only a small part, previously relocated to Denmark or Bavaria, has been preserved.
