Walter Larcher

Walter Larcher (born December 22, 1929 in Kitzbühel ) is an Austrian botanist and university professor.

Life

Larcher studied biology, geology and physics at the University of Innsbruck . In 1951 he completed his studies as a Mag. Rer. nat. and was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD. In 1962 he received the venia legendi in general botany and in 1965 became professor for general botany at the University of Innsbruck.

In 1965, he turned down a call to the chair for plant anatomy and physiology at the University of Vienna. Larcher was visiting professor at the Universities of Padua (1974 to 1976 and 1987 to 1988), Sapporo (1981) and Seattle (1990). In 1998, Larcher retired, his successor at the chair was Cornelius Lütz (until then at the GSF Research Center for Environment and Health in Munich).

Larcher's main research area is the ecophysiology of plants, in particular the reaction of plants to cold. He wrote one of the first and still important textbooks on the ecology of plants, which was also published in English.
