Walter Lewy (born November 10, 1905 in Bad Oldesloe ; † December 18, 1995 in São Paulo ) was a German-Brazilian artist of Jewish origin.

Life

After birth and childhood in Bad Oldesloe, Walter Lewy went to Dortmund in 1923 to the Academy of Applied Arts, where he studied until 1927. Here he was confronted for the first time with the “magical realism” and the “ surrealism ” of Yves Tanguy and Max Ernst . Both artists had a lasting influence on Walter Lewy's art. His first solo exhibition took place in Bad Lippspringe in 1932 . The Reich Chamber of Culture, which was dominated by the National Socialists , banned further exhibitions due to its Jewish origin. In 1937 Walter Lewy emigrated to Brazil . He left numerous works of art in Holland, all of which were lost in the war. Walter Lewy lived and worked in São Paulo until his death in 1995. He is considered to be the most important representative of Brazilian surrealism.

In 1944 the first exhibition took place in São Paulo at Clovis Graciano, in 1956 the first major exhibition followed in the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP). Lewy took part in several Saõ Paulo biennials between 1951 and 1975 . In 1974 a retrospective was held at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP).
