Walter John Savitch (born February 21, 1943 ) is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at the University of California, San Diego .

Life

Savitch received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1969. - Degree in mathematics. He is best known for defining the complexity class NL of nondeterministic logarithmic problems, and in particular also for Savitch's theorem , which describes the relationship between the complexity classes NSPACE and DSPACE . The complexity class NL was the first formally defined NLOGSPACE complete language. This fundamental finding led to more extensive research into the complete problems of complexity theory . He has also contributed important work to the theories of nondeterministic and parallel computational models.

His research areas include complexity theory , formal languages, and natural language / computable language processing . In addition to his work in theoretical computer science , Savitch has also written several textbooks for learning C / C ++ , Java , Ada and other programming languages.
