Sir Walter de Dunstanville (also Walter III de Dunstanville ) (* after 1212; † January 14, 1270 ) was an English knight.

Life

Walter de Dunstanville came from the Anglo-Norman family Dunstanville . He was a son of his father of the same name Walter de Dunstanville II and his wife Petronilla Fitzalan. After the death of his father in 1241 he inherited his estate in Wiltshire , from his mother he inherited Isleham in Cambridgeshire . In 1242 he took part in the unsuccessful campaign of King Heinrich III. in Gascony , he also took part in the wars against Wales in the 1240s and 1250s. During the Second War of the Barons , he supported Henry III. , but in the Battle of Lewes in 1264 he fled the battlefield. The king later pardoned him and appointed him constable of Salisbury Castle in May 1265 .

He made several donations for the benefit of the Cistercian monastery Stanley Abbey in Wiltshire. He was buried in St Andrew's Church in Castle Combe , Wiltshire, where his magnificent funerary memorial is preserved.

Family and offspring

Walter had at least two children:

  • Walter de Dunstanville († 1246)
  • Petronilla de Dunstanville (1248 – around 1292)
  1. ∞ Robert de Montfort († 1274)
  2. ∞ John de la Mare († 1313)

Walter survived his son, and with him the Dunstanville family died out in the male line. His heiress became his daughter Petronilla, who bequeathed the property to William de Montfort, their son from their first marriage. This sold most of the Dunstanville inheritance.
