Coat of arms of the Vautort family

The Vautort family (also Valletort ) was an Anglo-Norman noble family.

Allegedly the family came from the French village of Vautorte , which is about 30 km south of Mortain . It is more likely, however, that the family came from Torteval in Calvados . After the Norman conquest of England , Reginald de Vautort received extensive holdings in south-west England, the center of which was Trematon Castle in Devon. In the early 13th century, Roger II de Vautort acquired claims to the Honor of Harberton in Devon . These other possessions were confirmed to Reginald II de Vautort after the First Barons' War , who became one of the most powerful nobles in south-west England.

Although the family were among the largest landowners in south-east Cornwall and the adjacent parts of Devon, they played almost no political role outside of south-west England. After Reginald II de Vautort died in 1245 without male heirs, the family began to decline. The greatest beneficiary of this was Richard of Cornwall , the brother of King Henry III. Presumably, Ralph II de Vautort, who had inherited his brother Reginald in 1245, began selling parts of the property. His heir became his son Reginald III de Vautort († 1269), who probably died as a minor. Thereupon his uncle Roger III de Vautort († 1274) inherited the property, but he sold large parts of the family property. The Honor of Trematon was acquired by Richard of Cornwall, further lands went to Bishop Walter of Bronescombe of Exeter and Alexander of Okeston , who had married Joan, the widow of Rogers III's brother Ralph II. When Roger III de Vautort died childless in late 1274, the remaining estates, encumbered with nearly £ 500 in debt, fell to the Crown. At the end of the 13th century, King Edward I divided the lands between Peter Corbet and Henry Pomeroy , who were descendants of two sisters of Roger II de Vautort.

By marriage in 1493 large parts of the property fell to the Edgcumbe family , whose heads of family have been using the title Viscount Mount Edgcumbe and Valletort since 1781 .

Trematon Castle was the 12th focus of the Vautort family's holdings
