The Wankhede Stadium is a cricket stadium in Mumbai , India . The name of the stadium goes back to the former President of the Indian Cricket Association (BCCI) and politician SK Wankhede. It was built in 1974 and served, among other things, as the venue for the final of the 2011 Cricket World Cup . It is also used as the home stadium by the Indian Premier League team Mumbai Indians.

Capacity and infrastructure

After construction, the stadium had a capacity of around 45,000 spectators. After the renovation for the Cricket World Cup in 2011, the capacity dropped to 33,317 spectators. The ends are called Garware Pavilion End and Tata End.

Use in the IPL

In the Indian Premier League, it serves as the home stadium for the Mumbai Indians. It had to share this status in the premiere season with the DY Patil Stadium in the suburb of Navi Mumbai . In addition, the two semi-finals this season were played here. In the following two years, the stadium was renovated with a view to the 2011 Cricket World Cup, so that it can only be used as a home stadium again from the fourth season in 2011. International cricket

In international cricket, the stadium owned by the Mumbai Cricket Association competes with the Brabourne Stadium , also located in Mumbai, owned by the Cricket Club of India. It was used as a venue several times for the Cricket World Cups . At the Cricket World Cups 1987 it was a preliminary round game and a semi-final, at the Cricket World Cup 1996 one preliminary game and at the Cricket World Cup 2011 two preliminary round games and the final.
