The Brabourne Stadium is a cricket stadium in Mumbai , India . It was built in 1937 and is owned by the Cricket Club of India . In addition to the cricket facilities, the surrounding complex includes numerous other sports facilities.
Emergence
The stadium was built with the intention of creating the Indian counterpart to Lord's Cricket Ground . It was built on sea-reclaimed land that was given to Cricket Club of India by the Governor of Bombay's Lord Brabourne , which at the time was considered the Indian counterpart of the Marylebone Cricket Club .
Capacity and infrastructure
The stadium currently has a capacity of around 20,000 spectators. In addition to the Cricket Stadium, numerous other sports facilities of the Cricket Club of India are located on the premises. The ends are called Garware Pavilion End and Church Gate End.
National cricket
Until 1973, the stadium hosted the games of the Bombay cricket team . Since then, only a few first-class games within the Ranji Trophy have been played in the stadium . It also plays individual games of the Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League .
International cricket
After the first test in Mumbai was held at the Bombay Gymkhana , the Brabourne Stadium was built to host international cricket. The first test was held in 1948 on the West Indies tour against India . 17 tests were carried out until 1973, when a dispute arose between the Cricket Club of India and the Bombay Cricket Association over the distribution of tickets for international games. The association then built its own stadium, the Wankhede Stadium , which has since hosted international games. It was not until 1989 that international cricket was played here again at the MRF World Series 1989/90 . As a result, more tour matches were played at the Brabourne Stadium. At the ICC Champions Trophy 2006 the stadium hosted five games including the final. In 2009 another test was carried out on the Sri Lankan tour .
Other usage
The stadium is also used for concerts and events. The ATP Mumbai was held in the affiliated tennis facilities in 2006 and 2007 . In 1955 it was the venue for a soccer friendly between India and the Soviet Union.
