Wanla monastery
Wanla Gompa ( Urdu وانلا گومپا) is a Buddhist monastery on a mountain above the village of Wanla in Ladakh . Its three-story well-preserved Avalokiteshvara Temple is one of the oldest known Drigung Kagyu prayer varieties preserved in Ladakh. Wanla Gompa is a sub -monastery of Lamayuru Monastery that provides a monk for daily ceremonies and access to the monastery. The main picture shows Avalokitesvara with 11 heads in “Chuchigzhel” shape.
The monastery and some outbuildings from the 1980s are located in the few remains of a fortress. According to the Chronicles of Ladakh, the fortress is said to have been built by King Lhachen Ngaglug (lHa-chen Ngag-lug) in the 12th century. The monastery was built in the fortress in the 14th century. This point in time is significant as it fills an otherwise existing gap between the construction of the Achi Monastery with its latest buildings from the early 13th century and the establishment of the Kingdom of Ladakh in the early 15th century.
The monastery is being restored by the Achi Association.
