Tub grave from Stampa

The so-called tub grave of Stampa is located in the Palü district in the southwest of the village of Stampa in Bergell in the canton of Graubünden . It is the only known grave of its kind in Switzerland.

description

The grave is also called "soldiers' grave", "stone grave" or in Italian masso avello . It is carved into a large flat granite block with great precision and is located directly on the southern bank of the Mera , which flows through the Bergell. The tub is 1.92 meters long, 82 centimeters wide and 58 centimeters deep. At its western end a threshold was worked out so that the dead man faced east.

To prevent the lid from slipping, a rectangular recess 14 centimeters wide was made around the tub. According to local tradition, the lid fell into the river and cracked there. The rainwater was drained through a narrow channel.

history

Of these massi avell i, around 30 have now been identified; most of them are in the Como area . Fragments found in their vicinity suggest an origin from 100 to 400 AD. It is not clear which people they are to be ascribed to. The elaborate work suggests that the grave must have been made for an important person. Since it is the only known grave in the region, the local population can be excluded as builders. A Roman burial is also unlikely, as the tomb that would certainly have been erected on such an important person is missing. Erwin Poeschel therefore suspects a high Roman official who belonged to a tribe settling in the Como area.
