St. Rupert am Kulm is a Roman Catholic parish church in Ramsau am Dachstein in Styria . The wall paintings from the 13th to 17th centuries and the numerous preserved bank notes are of particular historical significance .

History and design

According to architectural findings, the origins of the Romanesque church go back to the 12th century. The nave with the dimensions of 9 m × 15 m was supplemented in 1444 by the 9.50 m deep Gothic chancel, which for unknown reasons does not follow the building axis of the nave, but is attached at an angle. The builder of the three-pile and a net vault spanned sanctuary with 5/8 closing was Stefan Günzperger from Bischofshofen , called in an inscription. After its expansion, the church was consecrated by the Chiemsee auxiliary bishop Sylvester Pflieger ; a reliquary vessel with his seal was found during a renovation in 1966.

The denomination practiced in the church has changed several times , analogous to the history of the Reformation in Ramsau. The Ramsau and with it the Kulmer Church were reformed under the Hofmann von Strechau in the second half of the 16th century. In the course of the Counter-Reformation in the 17th century, Ramsau was formally Catholic again, although the inhabitants, as false Catholics, remained Protestant. After the tolerance patent of 1781, Kulm became the first Protestant tolerance community in Styria. By an edict from Prince-Bishop Ottokar Maria Graf von Attems , Kulm was elevated to a Catholic parish in 1859 .

The church patron, St. Rupert , first bishop of Salzburg, is depicted at the high altar and with a statue. The high altar from the 18th century shows a copy of the Innsbruck Madonna by Lucas Cranach the Elder above the Rupert picture , both pictures were painted by Johan Baptist König from Salzburg.

The side altars are on the left an altar of Mary around 1760, which was in the Minorite Church in Bruck an der Mur until 1952 , and on the right a trinity altar .

The wall paintings in the church go back to the 13th century. The oldest painting is the lower strip of image on the longitudinal wall of the nave with the depiction of the Last Judgment with Christ as judge of the world, depictions of the apostles and saints as well as the throat of hell. The four large scenes above with Christophorus, Christ on the Mount of Olives, Mary with saints and George fighting the dragon come from the 15th century. A written creed was added in the 17th century. In the chancel there are more frescoes from the period immediately after its construction in the middle of the 15th century, but they have already been severely faded and damaged. Crucifixion and Descent from the Cross, Resurrection and Ascension, Last Judgment and the martyrdom of St. Sebastian can still be recognized.

The pews in the church, which date from around 1750, are also historically significant. The bank notes from the Ramsau farmers, who had the right to sit there at the time the benches were set up, have been preserved and are still attached to the benches under protective glass.

The last major renovations to the church took place in 1952 and 1996. The organ of the church was made in 1987 by Krenn in Graz.
