The Wapel

The Wapelbad is a light and air bath on the Wapel in the Gütersloh district of Kattenstroth . It can be reached via the B61 (Westring), Buxelstraße and Zum Wapelbad.

history

The Wapelbad was put into operation in 1925 and for years served as an outdoor pool for bathing guests . In the 1930s, a kiosk, a separate pool for children and a large sunbathing area were built in the Wapelbad. In the hot summer of 1959, more than 50,000 people visited the bathing establishment. In the 1960s, however, the Wapelbad had to be closed due to poor water quality . Since then it is no longer used as a swimming pool, but as a light and air bath. In 1992 and 2007 the facility was renovated.

The Wapelbad today

Even today it is not allowed to bathe in the Wapel. Younger visitors can take a dip in a swimming pool. There are also toilets, changing rooms and a kiosk.

The "Förderverein Wapelbad" takes care of the maintenance of the facility, organizes cultural and sporting events as well as a gastronomic offer. During opening hours, visitors can take part in leisure activities such as B. (Beach) volleyball, badminton, soccer, table tennis or climbing on specially attached climbing ropes. In 2006, a local volleyball club built a beach volleyball field that is open to all visitors (outside of training hours). In addition, open-air concerts are held.
