The city of Mühldorf am Inn has had its own coat of arms since the late 13th century . It shows - speaking for the name of the city - a red mill wheel on a silver background.

history

The oldest surviving seal of the city comes from an impression from the year 1298. This seal was probably made around the year 1290. It shows the mill wheel in a grid field with 16 blades. Further images of this coat of arms can be found in a document of the Raitenhaslach monastery from 1307 and in documents from 1311 and 1313. All later seals only have eight blades.

The SECRETU CIVIU I MULDORFENSIUM , created around the middle of the 14th century, shows the wheel in a smooth field for the first time. The mill wheel has been in the shield since the 16th century. In 1507 the Archbishop of Salzburg, Leonhard von Keutschach, confirmed the coat of arms. Today's tinging in the colors red and white is first documented in the codex of the coat of arms of the Salzburg heraldry that was created around 1530. It is based on the colors of the Salzburg Archbishopric , to which Mühldorf belonged until 1802. Even after the incorporation into the Electorate of Bavaria, the colors were retained. Only in isolated sources from the 19th century does the coat of arms show a blue wheel on a silver background.

The Mühldorfer wheel also served as a motif for the coat of arms of the neighboring municipality of Altmühldorf, which was incorporated in 1978 . The coat of arms adopted there in 1969 shows half a mill wheel in the lower field.
