history
The coat of arms of the city of Merkendorf can be traced back to 1473. The continuous St. Andrew's cross is taken from the family coat of arms of the Counts of Oettingen , who owned large estates in Merkendorf until 1275.
Over time, the two round legs of the letter M were provided with arrowheads, so that later the M was interpreted as an anchor. There are different attempts to interpret the coat of arms: Once the St. Andrew's cross was interpreted as the Swedish cross . The anchor was associated with the fountain coat of arms of the Heilsbronn monastery , as this once had many possessions in Merkendorf. The most likely interpretation is that the anchor used to be the first letter of the city's name.
In 1835 the city council specified the official color of the coat of arms: "The shield is silver, the anchor gold and the St. Andrew's cross red".
