The coat of arms of Sandau is the official emblem of the city of Sandau (Elbe) in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

The seal was created around 1361 when an order from Emperor Charles IV forced the city to take the oath of homage to the Archbishopric of Magdeburg and to include its coat of arms and patron saint, Saint Mauritius, in the city's emblems. An earlier seal from the 13th century shows a castle with the Brandenburg eagle between the towers. Then the representation of the seal and later the coat of arms changed several times. If Saint Mauritius first wore the Magdeburg shield in front of his chest, he was soon standing and instead leaned on a second shield. End of forg. In the 19th century, he again relied on the Magdeburg shield and even hung it again in front of the castle.

It should be mentioned that at first only the seal was used and used. Nothing is known about the award of the coat of arms or a letter of arms.

In accordance with the city's request, the previously used coat of arms was redesigned, on the one hand to bring the coat of arms largely closer to the historically transmitted model and, on the other hand, to take into account the heraldic customs in the stylistic execution of symbols. The latter includes that the shield ground was filled with the wall. Saint Mauritius was slightly enlarged and raised to the center of the shield; accordingly, the tower and roof peaks were reduced in size.

Another change is the breakthrough between the two towers. A roof between two towers is expressly mentioned in the historical descriptions, ie the background in front of which the Mauritius stands must correspond to the tincture of the shield. Such graphics and tinging also correspond to the symbolism of the symbolism: Mauritius stands armed in the city gate to protect the place. In the depictions of the last few decades he was in front of a red background - that is, in a building. This is wrong.

The second shield in front of the city wall has now also disappeared. The patron saint Mauritius, who is responsible for the entire Archdiocese of Magdeburg, d. H. Archbishopric and cathedral was valid, based on its shield, divided from red to silver, as is legitimate.

Based on the city colors that were used up until the beginning of this century, the shield was tinged in gold again instead of the silver shield used in GDR times. This color (tincture) harmonizes perfectly with the red of the castle complex. Mauritius wears blue armor and a silver glory.
