description

Tyroff: Book of arms of the higher nobility of the German federal states, 1846–1865, scan from Google / Bayerische Staatsbibliothek

The complete coat of arms book consists of 22 volumes with 400 copper plates of the Austrian monarchy (1831 - 1855) and 13 volumes of all princely and counts houses of the Austrian monarchy (1852 - 1865). It was published in Nuremberg by JA Tyroff (1801–1872), a member of the Tyroff family of engravers and publishers . The Tyroffs were not only related to the Siebmacher coat of arms , but also related to business. They separated in 1791 and the Tyroffs published their own series of "Tyroff's Wappenbuch" until the 19th century. In contrast to the Siebmacher coat of arms books, they made a landscape structure in their coat of arms collections. In addition, they presented fewer coats of arms on each side and showed particularly beautiful and important coats of arms on a whole page. The representation of the coats of arms was done by hatching , the disadvantage is that there is no genealogical information in the Tyroff's book of arms of the Austrian monarchy.

In his preliminary report on Volume 1 of February 1831, JA Tyroff wrote:

“Encouraged by the favorable reception that both the“ Wappenbuch des Kingdom of Bavaria ”and that of the“ Prussian Monarchy ”had found, I decided (...) to dare to publish a similar work for the imperial Austrian states. - This work should include the coats of arms of all princely, countless, baronial and aristocratic houses raised in the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as the families that already existed and are currently still flourishing, and from now on a volume of the same should be delivered annually. - (...) up to the present volume, which contains 1 ducal, 56 princely and 43 counts coats of arms, in strict alphabetical order, could appear. Everything was done to deliver the coat of arms correctly and with the greatest possible heraldic accuracy. "
