The Elmstein Wappenschmiede was a tool and equipment smithy established by Johann Lanz in Elmstein am Speyerbach in 1792 . Originally, a bellows , four tail hammers and a large grindstone were driven by three overshot water wheels with a diameter of 2.20 to 2.30 meters .
The coat of arms forge was operated by the last blacksmith , Heinrich Haag, until 1975 . Today it is a cultural monument and working museum under the name of Historische Wappenschmiede Elmstein .
Mill complex
The founder, Johann Lanz, was also the owner and operator of the grinding and sawmill opposite, of which only the buildings have survived. The owners Römer and Haag followed him. In 1844, a hemp grater was set up in the forge for the extraction of hemp fibers , which was shut down after 1887.
The last blacksmith Heinrich Haag made equipment for forest workers , stone breakers , stone masons , bricklayers and raftsmen , such as
- Splitting wedges , peel iron , peeling shovels , log splitters , culture hoes , planting iron ;
- Two top , masons hammers , stone wedges , stone Schlegel , Grähnel , jointer , chisels , dry stone hammers ;
- Wagon axles , field hoes , karsts with 2 or 3 tines, meadow axes , plowshares , raftsman hooks
One of the four tail hammers was replaced by a spring hammer .
museum
The cultural monument was acquired by the Elmstein community from descendants of the Haag blacksmith family. In April 2012, a non-profit association was founded with the aim of presenting the forge to interested visitors after the hammer mill was ready for operation as part of a "working museum" with forging demonstrations, courses and hands-on activities. Now the museum is at Möllbachstr. 7, 67471 Elmstein, every third Sunday of the month from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on German Milling Day , with blacksmithing demonstrations being offered.
