Warhammer Quest is a board game based on fantasy role-playing games . The game by Andy Jones was released by Games Workshop in 1995 and is a direct development of HeroQuest . The first version was only available in English. The new editions Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower from 2016 and Warhammer Quest: Shadows Over Hammerhal from 2017 were also published in German, although the titles of the games were not translated.

Gameplay

In Warhammer Quest, the participants play a group of heroes, each with different skills, and as this one search dungeons for monsters (enemies) and treasures (rewards).

The background story of the game is based on the Warhammer world of Games Workshop and the fantasy games and tabletops known from it . However, here no armies compete against each other, but a small group of heroes in the typical role-playing style against a relatively manageable number of opponents.

In contrast to its predecessor HeroQuest, the playing field is built up modularly from individual room map parts and not on a fixed board. These are gradually brought into the game and equipped with monsters while the players explore the respective dungeon. As with its predecessor, the game uses detailed , paintable plastic figures modeled by Citadel ( Games Workshop ).

In the original variant, the group acts together against another player, the game master. This controls the monsters and tries to kill the heroes. He is the only one who has access to the game manual, on which all rooms, traps, monsters, treasures etc. are listed. Fighting is done using a very simple and uncomplicated dice system. Purchasable equipment, artifacts and treasure maps are used for the gradual development of your own character.

Extensions

Various expansions were released for the game. This included additional adventures, heroes, treasure maps and a set of blank monsters and event cards that you could fill with your own content.

Later versions and variants

Warhammer Quest: The Adventure Card Game

A cooperative card game for 1 to 4 players, the content of which is about the same topic, but which, according to the rules, uses playing cards.

Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower

Game situation from the board game Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower

Silver Tower was released in 2016. With this new variant, four players play together against the game, there is no need for a game master to control the villains. Instead, the game uses elements of fighting fantasy , in which the pages and chapters of the quest book are rolled out.

In addition, the plot was moved to the "Age of Sigmar", which takes place after the destruction of the Warhammer Fantasy world.

Warhammer Quest: Shadows Over Hammerhal

The Shadows Over Hammerhal, released in 2017, is basically a remake of the old Warhammer Quest. The biggest difference is that the timeline takes place in the "Age of Sigmar", as with Silver Tower. In contrast to Silver Tower, in Shadows Over Hammerhal a player takes on the role of the evil "Overlord" who controls the monsters and villains in the dungeon. In addition, four hero characters are always played. If the required number of five players is not reached, the existing players also take on additional roles so that four heroes can act.

Extensions for Silver Tower and Shadows Over Hammerhal

Both games use the same rules mechanics, thanks to this design decision, extensions can be used for both games. In addition, both games can function as an extension to each other, since you can use their characters in the other game.
