Warsow (also War§ow ) is a first-person shooter for Windows , Linux and Mac OS X . The game uses a free graphics engine based on Qfusion , a modification of the Quake 2 GPL engine , and is therefore licensed under the GNU GPL except for a number of game data . A comic-like graphic with shades similar to cel shading is deliberately used to guarantee the visibility of the players and the surroundings. The idea of cel shading has already been used in other games such as XIII .
The gameplay is similar to well-known shooters like Unreal Tournament , but above all to the Quake 3 modification Challenge Pro Mode Arena (CPMA) with a multitude of possible trick jumps . Warsow is a very fast shooter that requires a long time to get used to before the full range of possibilities can be exploited.
history
Warsow was of large e-sports leagues like the ESL or Clanbase added, but now discontinued. However, the community itself organizes a lot of cups.
Since May 26, 2008 Warsow was a discipline in the GIGA League of the former television station GIGA .
An SDK is available for download for mod developers from the developer's website .
With version 0.4 on January 19, 2008, Mac OS X was also supported for the first time .
On October 18, 2012, the game was released freely on GOG.com . On February 9, 2013 Warsow joined “ Steam Greenlight” with the aim of including Warsow in Steam. For this, enough interest must be shown by the Steam Community, which was achieved on September 18, 2013. Since then there has been no further development for the Steam port.
Movement / Items
In addition to the classic tricks from the Quake series (bunny hops, penalty jumps), the developers also have new tricks such as "jumps off the wall" (Wall Dodge) and "double (Hetz) jumps" (Double Dash Jump) and weapon jumps (dash + Rocket on the wall for reaching a very high speed in a short time, grenade on the ground and jump at the right moment to jump very high, shoot up walls with plasma gun) built into Warsow. There is also a complete power-up system as well as weak and strong ammunition for each weapon. The latter must be collected separately and will be fired first when it has been recorded. In the Clan Arena (Ca) mode, in which you already have all your weapons, the player can start in different classes: The Grunt (1st class) has more powerful missiles (rl) and more powerful shotgun shots (rg), the Camper (2nd class) ) has a better Electrobolt (eb) (similar to Railgun / sniper rifle), which not only shoots more strongly, the effect is even instant (immediate). Furthermore, the camper has stronger grenades (gl) that explode immediately after the second contact with the ground. The spammer (3rd class) has a more powerful plasma gun (pg, similar to machine gun) and a more powerful laser gun (lg, similar to flamethrower). As soon as a player has shot all of his strong ammo, he only shoots weak ammo afterwards. The 7th weapon, the "Gunblade" (gb, mixture of circular saw and rifle) has no class as a strong weapon, as there is no strong ammo for it on the maps. Furthermore, the machine gun (mg) was implemented in version 0.5.
Bots
As of version 0.4, Warsow has new bots that can use objects, move (with the exception of weapon jumps) and aim well. Furthermore, the bots "count" the health points of their opponents and, depending on the situation, cleverly change the weapon (e.g. opponent has little HP, bot takes the riotgun / shotgun)
Game modes
The following game modes are available in Warsow :
- Deathmatch (short: DM)
- Team Deathmatch (short: TDM)
- Capture the Flag (short: CTF)
- Instagib
- Duel
- Clan Arena (short: CA; integrated from version 0.3)
- Duel Arena (short: DA; integrated from version 0.4)
- Race
- Bomb & Defuse (short: bomb; integrated from version 0.5)
- Capture the Flag - Tactics (short: ctft)
- Team Domination (short: tdo; integrated from version 0.5)
- Headhunt (integrated from version 0.5)
- Midair
But as of version 0.5, there is the opportunity to own game modes, called gametypes to create without spending in the community C to have to go. This is done in the scripting language AngelScript , which works very similarly to the common C and C ++ programming languages. This created a large number of "community gametypes" that further expand the package.
Here is a small selection of the more common:
- CTF: Tactics
- GunGame Advanced (short: aGunGame, by shooting other players you get better weapons)
- Freeze Tag (in short: ftag, instead of killing the player when shot down, the player is frozen (iced up) and must first be defreezed (de-iced) by a teammate)
- EasterEggs (was a themed gametype that quickly became very popular. After Easter, part of the community asked for the gametype to be continued, but the administrators decided against it)
- Halloween (was also a themed gametype in which players dropped candy after death, which the teams could then pick up to earn points)
