The Beerwalde moated castle , also the Waal tower hill . Wallburg , Wall , called Schanze , is a lost moated castle east of the church in the Beerwalde district of the municipality of Erlau in the district of central Saxony in Saxony .
history
The moated castle, the tower hill "Waal" , was founded around 1230 and was the seat of the Lords of Beerwalde. In 1283 and 1303 the knights Herrmann (Hermannus de Berenwalde) and Friedrich von Beerwalde are documented. At the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th century, the castle was destroyed by fire and not rebuilt afterwards. The lords of Beerwalde founded their new seat, Kriebstein Castle, nearby in the 14th century . In 1890 the tomb of the von Arnim family was laid out on the “Waal” . From 1967 to 1970 archaeological excavations took place on the castle grounds.
description
The moated castle, which is also the type of a tower hill castle (Motte), had an artificially raised interior, a tower hill, the "Waal" (= elevation), a surrounding moat and an outer wall, presumably with palisades .
In the course of the excavations from 1967 to 1970, the foundation walls of the tower, the remains of a wooden bridge over the moat were uncovered and objects made of ceramics and metal were found. The Burgstall (Burgstelle) is today a ground monument and Saxon cultural monument .
