Water house in Esslingen

The water house is a weir in Esslingen am Neckar .

history

The water house was planned by Karl Friedrich von Duttenhofer (1801–1871) in 1823 and built a year later to replace an ice rake . In 1954 most of the screen posts were renewed, in 1965 the structure was given a concrete slab, and in 2003/04 the wooden supports of the foundation were repaired. The weir at the upper end of the hammer channel has four of sandstone brick pillars and three weir with two wooden shooters . A timber-framed building with a hipped roof rests on the pillars and serves as a public footbridge over the canal.

The Hammer Canal branches off the main arm of the Neckar in a north-westerly direction at the water house and splits into the Rossneckar Canal and the Wehrneckar Canal at the former Upper Mill (Kanalstrasse 16). The Rossneckar Canal divides again into two engine canals and then joins the Wehrneckar Canal with both arms at the level of the Agnes Bridge . The Schelzwasenkanal branches off from this at the level of the Schelztorsporthalle and the Rossneckar divides again at the Bäckermühlen weir. The canal arms meet again north of Schelztorstraße 42. In the west of the city, this Stadtneckar joins the main arm of the Neckar, which is used by shipping. The Stadtneckar canals, at the beginning of which the water house stands, were expanded in the 19th century. Until the 1870s or 1880s, water power was an important means of propulsion, then it was replaced by steam power. The canals and the associated structures document a phase of industrialization in Esslingen.
