Ice rake

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ice rakes were used to protect the water wheels of mills , bridges etc. from ice floes .

Ice rakes consisted of several oak stakes that were pointed and driven at an angle against the direction of flow of the water above the grinding channel or the facility to be protected. They were attached to a beam and were also known as ice trees.

Apparently the erection of ice rakes could also have negative consequences for the river residents. For example, a complaint by the municipality of Griesheim (Offenburg) against an ice rake in the Kinzig has been handed down.
