The Jeddore Lake is a reservoir in the south of the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .
Reservoir
Jeddore Lake covers an area of 177 km². Including two large, centrally located islands, the lake covers almost 200 km². The lake is at an altitude of about 179 m . Originally the Salmon River flowed from the upstream Round Pond through several lakes and flowed into a side bay of the Bay d'Espoir . Its damming 16 km above the estuary and other dams further east created today's reservoir. Through the construction of further dams and canals, the catchment area was enlarged to an area of 5910 km² and extends to Victoria Lake, 120 km further west .
Bay d'Espoir hydropower station
The Bay d'Espoir ( ⊙ ) hydroelectric power station was officially opened on August 15, 1967 by Prime Minister Joey Smallwood . Initially the power plant had 4 units with a total of 300 MW. In 1970 the power plant was expanded to include two more units with a total of 150 MW. In 1977 a final unit with 150 MW was added. The power plant thus has 7 units with a total output of 604 MW. The turbines are distributed over two power plant buildings. These each have their own inlet duct. The used drop height is 176 m. The expansion water volume is 397 m³ / s. A 4.4 km long drainage channel leads the water below the power station to the head of the nearby Bay d'Espoir. There is the community of Milltown-Head of Bay d'Espoir . The facility is operated by Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro , a subsidiary of Nalcor Energy . The annual energy production is 2,650 GWh. This makes it the largest hydroelectric power station in Newfoundland.
