The Salmon River (English for "Salmon River") is a river in the south of the island of Newfoundland, which belongs to the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .
Former river system
Before 1965, the Salmon River drained an area of more than 2,700 km². The former catchment area included the Round Pond and the upstream lakes Cold Spring Pond and Great Burnt Lake . The course of the Salmon River led south from Round Pond to a lake system that was dammed up to Jeddore Lake in 1967 . The mean discharge on what was then Long Pond was 85.8 m³ / s.
Today's river system
With the construction of several dams and canals as part of a larger hydropower project, the 16 km long lower course of the Salmon River was separated from its upstream river system. The damming created Jeddore Lake, whose water is mainly fed to the Bay d'Espoir hydropower station and then flows into the sea. Above Round Lake are two rivers: the West Salmon River has its origin in Cold Spring Pond , the North Salmon River (also Crow Brook ) in Great Burnt Lake . Both lakes are dammed by dams. Its water flows through a separate canal to the Upper Salmon hydroelectric power station , from which it reaches the Round Pond.
A small amount of water still reaches the lower reaches of the Salmon River from Jeddore Lake via a weir. The remaining catchment area covers around 85 km². The Salmon River flows into the head end of the East Bay , a small side bay in the west of the Bay d'Espoir .
