The Upper Salmon hydropower plant is located on the island of Newfoundland, which belongs to the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .
The Upper Salmon hydropower plant is part of a larger hydropower project. Upstream is the Granite Canal hydropower station , downstream the Bay d'Espoir hydropower station . A canal leads from the upstream Cold Spring Lake to the power station. The lake is dammed by a dam on the West Salmon River to a height of 241 m . The Cold Spring Lake is fed by several upstream dammed lakes: Great Burnt Lake , Crooked Lake and Meelpaeg Lake . The power plant uses a drop height of 51 m to the east Godaleich Pond , which drains to Round Pond . The hydropower plant went into operation in 1983. It has a Francis turbine with an installed capacity of 84 MW . The expansion water volume is 189.5 m³ / s. The average annual energy production is 570 GWh . The facility is operated by Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro , a subsidiary of Nalcor Energy .
