The Granite Canal hydropower plant is located on the island of Newfoundland, which is part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .
The Granite Canal hydropower plant is part of a larger hydropower project. Downstream is the Upper Salmon hydroelectric power station . A 7.2 km long canal leads from the upstream Granite Lake to the power station. The lake is dammed by a dam at Granite Lake Brook to a height of 309 m . The Granite Lake is fed by the upstream dammed lake Burnt Pond , from which a channel leads to Granite Lake, as well as by Victoria Lake , whose water is in turn diverted to Burnt Pond. The power plant uses a drop height of 37 m to the east of Meelpaeg Lake . The hydropower plant went into operation in 2003. It has a Kaplan turbine with an output of 40 MW. The expansion water volume is 122.4 m³ / s. The average annual energy production is 220 GWh. The facility is operated by Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro , a subsidiary of Nalcor Energy .
