The Kalivaç hydropower plant is a controversial hydro energy project on the central reaches of the Vjosa River in Albania . The river is considered "one of the last great wild rivers in Europe". Developers is the Italian company BEG of Francesco Becchetti .

geography

With a last narrow breakthrough in the river between a range of hills near the village of Kalivaç, construction of the hydropower plant began in 2008. The dam is located around 25 km north of Tepelena . The river drains the Greek Pindos Mountains and large areas of southern Albania into the Adriatic .

development

Construction of the dam began in 2007. In 2010, construction was stopped again. A dam over 500 m long and 60 m wide is planned. The Italian contractor has so far invested 70 million euros in the project. Becchetti owns a construction and garbage empire in Italy and the television station Agon Channel in Albania . The project was initially co-financed by Deutsche Bank , which, however, withdrew from the project.

criticism

In 2014, conservationists called for power plants to be dispensed with on the Vjosa and for the "wild river" to be declared a national park instead . In 2015, the EU Parliament also issued a report on Albania regarding the construction of hydropower plants in the country. In it, the course of the Vjosa river is described as an ecologically endangered area. The construction of dams in such areas must be better controlled by the Albanian government and the local public must be heard and included in the planning.
