history

The aqueduct , designed by engineer Bontadino de Bontadini based on the Roman model, supplied the port city of Valletta with drinking water that had to be brought there by carts beforehand. In the late 18th century, the aqueduct was reinforced again under Grand Master Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc .

function

As part of the Wignacourt aqueduct, the tower forwarded the water from the aqueduct flowing from Attard to Ħamrun through an underground pipe to Valletta. The tower served as an inspection point, the quality of the water could be observed in the open water tank. Similar towers were the Wignacourt Tower in Santa Venera and the Tower of St. Joseph in Floriana .
