The water tower in the south-west of Gliwice is a neo-Gothic building at ul.Sobieskiego 2.

history

The water tower was built on a hill between 1905 and 1908. The tower has a height of approx. 50 meters and a width of approx. 26 meters. The building was designed by Wilhelm Adalbert Otto Kranz. It was part of a water supply network between Zawada and Gleiwitz and was supposed to supply the southern districts of Gleiwitz with water. The tower and its water reservoir were built by Otto Intze (1843–1904) according to the Intze principle .

In 1941 the water tank was enlarged. From 1955 to 1958 the water tower underwent a thorough renovation. In 1974 the water tank was renewed. In 1977 the roof structure was renewed. From 1985 to 1986 an assessment of the condition of the structure was made, which suggested that the water tank should be replaced. This work was supposed to take place from 1988 and 1989, but the work was not carried out and the water tower was later completely decommissioned. It has been in private hands since the early 2000s.

After years of inactivity, the question of future use and the preservation of the listed building arises. In August 2008 there was a fire in which the roof burned down. In 2009 the media reported that the tower was being used for cultural purposes and that art would be exhibited in it. However, there was only one idea and the building is still unused and without a roof.
