Zawada (German: Zawada ) is a village in Upper Silesia . It is located in the municipality of Zbrosławice (Broslawitz) in the powiat Tarnogórski (Tarnowitz district) in the Silesian Voivodeship .

geography

Zawada is seven kilometers southwest of the Zbrosławice municipality , 16 kilometers southwest of the district town of Tarnowskie Góry ( Tarnowitz ) and 29 kilometers northwest of the voivodeship capital Katowice ( Kattowitz ).

The place is on the valley of the Drama River .

history

The place was mentioned in 1783 in the book Beytrage describing Silesia as Sowade , was in the Tost district and had 126 inhabitants, a farm, five farmers and 20 other houses. In 1818 the place was mentioned as Sowada and also as Zowade . In 1865 Zawada consisted of a manor and a village. The manor had been owned by Mr. Bannert since 1863 and owned a distillery. At that time, the village had 27 gardeners and a Catholic school.

In the referendum in Upper Silesia on March 20, 1921, 59 eligible voters voted to remain with Germany and 138 for membership in Poland. Zawada remained with the German Empire . On February 12, 1936, the place was renamed Bachweiler in the course of a wave of place renaming during the Nazi era . Until 1945 the place was in the district of Tost-Gleiwitz .

In 1945 the formerly German town came under Polish administration and was then attached to the Silesian Voivodeship and renamed the Polish Zawada . In 1950 the place came to the Katowice Voivodeship . In 1999 the place came to the re-established Powiat Tarnogórski and the new Silesian Voivodeship.

Attractions

  • The Markuskirche from 1852, it replaced a wooden church from the 17th century. Erected in the neo-Gothic style with a plastered facade. Karchowice branch church.
  • The Peter and Paul Chapel, a neo-Gothic chapel with a red brick facade from the 19th century with a bell tower as a roof turret.
  • 19th century castle, remodeled in 1906.
