Wilhelm Kuttler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilhelm Kuttler (born 1949 ) is a German geographer and professor of applied climatology and landscape ecology at the University of Duisburg-Essen .

Life

Wilhelm Kuttler studied physical geography with a focus on climatology and meteorology as well as biology at the University of Bochum from 1970 to 1975 . There he received his doctorate in 1978 with his work Influencing variables of health-threatening weather conditions and their bioclimatic effects . Until 1985 he worked as a research assistant in Bochum and received his habilitation there in 1984. After teaching at the University of Hanover , he accepted a professorship in Essen, where he set up the "Applied Climatology and Landscape Ecology" department.

In 2009 he was awarded the plaque of honor by the Association of German Engineers (VDI) for special services to the standardization of climatological issues. On March 17, 2016, Wilhelm Kuttler was awarded the Reinhard Süring plaque by the German Meteorological Society in recognition of his work in the field of applied meteorology .

job

Wilhelm Kuttler and his colleagues do research on issues of urban climatology and urban air hygiene. Particular attention is paid to immission climate aspects, taking climate change into account. In addition, the department carried out a series of third-party funded projects in urban climatology and air hygiene for cities, municipalities, engineering offices and ministries.

Kuttler's work shows the future changes caused by the overheating of the earth's climate system in the context of the climate crisis ; He calculated that with global warming of 1.6 degrees Celsius there will be up to 20 more hot summer days - defined as days with temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius - by 2050, with an increase of 3.0 degrees even 35 more hot summer days.

In 2018 he received the Luke Howard Award .

Further commitment

Kuttler was President of the Society for Ecology (GfÖ) from 1993 to 1996 . Since 1988 he has been one of the editors of the Journal for Applied Environmental Research (ZAU). He has a seat on the Scientific Advisory Board of the journal Geographica Helvetica and is the Review Editor of Climate Research .

In 1996 he initiated the "International Conference on Urban Climatology" (ICUC'96) at his university.
