history

The tower, clad with exposed brickwork, was designed by the Hamburg architect Fritz Höger and built between 1937–1938. Obtaining the material proved difficult; Iron for the concrete reinforcement and pipelines for connection to the drinking water supply had to be purchased in part from the Air Force and the Navy . The construction cost around 80,500 Reichsmarks .

The tower was put into operation on June 1, 1938.

The elevated tank of the 35 meter high tower holds 210 m³ of water. It stands on reinforced concrete supports. Office space was built into the lower floors of the tower. Between 1950 and 1971 the two lower floors housed the tourist office of the spa administration, later the association "Bad Zwischenahner Woche" was housed there. At times the tower also housed the so-called "East German home room".

Today the tower is used as a lookout tower. The viewing platform can be reached on foot via 180 steps.

In 2009 it was decided to illuminate the tower from the north and south .
