The water tower in Köthen station was built by the Royal Prussian Railway Directorate Magdeburg and is part of the Koethen railway station . The water tower was built to supply the railways with service water according to plans by the Prussian State Railways .

history

The expansion of the railway network and operation, in particular the route from Halle (Saale) via Köthen and Magdeburg, took place essentially in 1840. After the Magdeburg-Halberstädter Eisenbahngesellschaft achieved in 1876 that the Magdeburg-Leipzig Railway Company signed a contract on June 1 of that year the route network was bound, negotiations took place in 1879 between the Royal Prussian Railway Commission and the Magdeburg-Leipzig Railway Company for the state takeover of the railway, which was approved by the Kingdom of Prussia with the law of December 20, 1879 . The Magdeburg-Leipzig Railway was subordinated to the Royal Prussian Railway Directorate Magdeburg. In 1890 a branch line Köthen – Aken was built to enable a connection to the Elbhafen Aken from the route network.

The Magdeburg Railway Directorate was thus given responsibility for the Koethen railway station, which became more important as the railway operations increased. In order to supply the steam locomotives and the operation of the station, a service water supply had to be established by the railway at Köthen station.

planning

Due to the standardization of the Prussian railway system via the Reichseisenbahnamt in Berlin, the plans for such rail- side service water supplies go back to the Reichseisenbahnamt.

Building

On top of the masonry tower is a steel container with a volume of around 250 m³. However, the statically permissible amount of hot water for station operation was lower. The overall structure reaches a height of approximately 30 m.

After completion in 1915, buildings for the repair shop and for the staff were built in the water tower area.

The period of construction of the water tower lies in the years 1911 to 1912. During this time, the railway facilities in Köthen were also rebuilt due to the importance of the railway junction.

The time of the shutdown by the Deutsche Reichsbahn or Deutsche Bahn is not known.

technology

The structure is a conical tower substructure made of masonry with integrated masonry supports for load bearing, above which a steel container with a belt-like, circumferential walkway can be used to carry out maintenance tasks on the container.

The steel container is a so-called Barkhausen container and was designed spherically. With such a structurally favorable design, it offered the possibility of filling up from a pressurized water pipe in a short time. The spherical container is called Klönne type. The engineer August Klönne developed this construction method from 1886 and manufactured many of these containers with his Dortmund steel construction company Aug. Klönne from 1906 and made a name for himself beyond Germany in other steel construction sectors.

Change of use

A non-governmental initiative has prevented the demolition of the Köthen water tower, whose function was no longer required. The water tower with the main building has a new owner.
