Cottbus water tower
The water tower on Vetschauer Straße in Cottbus was built in 1914 on behalf of the Prussian State Railways to supply the steam locomotives and was shut down in 1955. The tower stands immediately south of the Cottbus train station and is a listed building . The elevated tank belongs to the "Klönne container systems" type and was built by the Dortmund steel construction company Aug. Klönne . Water towers like this one are models for the construction of numerous elevated tanks.
description
The tower's container has a capacity of 500 m³. The process water was pumped from the Spree into the 23 meter high tank. The tower shaft was built on a circular floor plan tapering upwards in bricks in a truss bond and remained unplastered. The end of the tower base is a walled-in cornice in a roll layer. On the north side there is a flat entrance porch under a gable roof . The small windows are barred. The tower shaft is divided by twelve slightly protruding pilaster strips , in every second delimited field there are two tall rectangular windows arranged one above the other with flat-arched lintels. The transition to the water tank is designed as a stepped cornice. The perforated iron support ring between the tower shaft and the container is used to ventilate and illuminate the drip tray.
The usable area of the tower is given as 111 m², which is distributed over three levels. The spherical container of the water tower consists of spatially curved and riveted metal sheets. On the outside of the container there is a catwalk-ladder combination, with the help of which the outer surface of the container could be checked. Approximately in the middle of the spherical container is the iron circular walkway mounted on consoles, the railing of which was designed in Art Nouveau shapes from flat bars. The walkway is reached via a mobile ladder, which can also be moved around the center axis of the container if necessary. This ladder, in turn, is entered through a window in the tower shaft and leads directly to the ventilation dome, which forms the end of the container. The ventilation dome is located directly above the inner cylinder and is made in the shape of an octagonal lantern . Originally, their tent roof was crowned by a weather vane.
Inside the tower shaft, a simple, curved, single-flight iron staircase with wooden steps and a railing made of flat steel has been preserved. The mezzanine ceilings are made of wooden planks. The technical equipment of the elevated tank is no longer available. A central passage with an iron ladder leads from the drip floor through the boiler to the ventilation hood, where the container installation is located and has been preserved.
Current usage
The tower has been out of service since 1955, is not used for any other purpose and is for sale for 98,000 euros (Sparkasse Cottbus).
