The water tower of Groß Vollstedt is located on a small hill in the northeast of the town of Groß Vollstedt in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district . The tower is a simple, cylindrical brick structure that reveals walled-up doors and window openings.

Building history

In 1907 the community of Groß Vollstedt founded a water pipe cooperative. A well was drilled on the low-lying Meiereiweg. From there, a pump driven by a wind turbine pumped the water into the pipeline network. Since the wind power was presumably insufficient for an even supply, the water tower was built at the higher northeast exit of the village in 1925 . The building, which was initially painted white, had a 60 m³ water tank that was able to compensate for fluctuations in consumption and ensured even water pressure . It was not a steel container, rather the inside of the tower was plastered at the top and served directly to hold the water. The container was only accessible through a skylight.

After the Second World War , the construction showed weaknesses: the plaster had become brittle and the water ran down the outer facade. In addition, the volume of the container was no longer sufficient for the increased population of the place. So the cooperative decided to extensively renovate and expand the tower, which was carried out in 1947:

  • The tower was increased by 2 m, which increased its capacity to 80 m³.
  • The entire tower was sheathed with 25 cm thick masonry and also received a 3 cm thick layer of asphalt.

During the masonry work, the paneled door and window openings, which are still visible today, were also created. But there have never been doors or windows.

In the late 1950s, the cooperative modernized the system. A new well with modern pumping equipment and pressure control made the water tower for pressure equalization superfluous. However, the tower was initially used as a fire fighting water storage facility for the northern part of the village, and the wind turbine was dismantled.

In 1969 the community took over the building because the cooperative could no longer pay the maintenance costs. After the roof had been torn down in a storm and an emergency concrete ceiling had overloaded the masonry, renewed renovation was necessary in 1989.

Reuse

A change of use took place in 1998, when the tower also received its current conical roof. The water storage was finally given up, since then the tower has served as a cave for bats and owls . For this purpose, an entry into the roof was built so that the animals can fly in and out here unhindered. The conversion came about on the initiative of Groß Vollstedter citizens in cooperation with the bat protection working group and the national owl protection association .
