Bertherode Castle

The castle Bertherode is an Outbound hilltop castle on the hill rising "Kesselberg" at 285  m above sea level. NN (field name: "on the square plate") about 2000 meters northwest of the old town of Melsungen in the Schwalm-Eder district in Hesse .

The castle was the seat of the Lords of Bertherode. The knights Berthold and Konrad von Bertherode were henchmen of Hermann von Spangenberg. The castle was probably already destroyed by Landgrave Heinrich I of Hesse between 1247 and 1263 and was not rebuilt. No remains of the former castle complex have survived.

The village of Bert (h) erode, which fell desolately at the end of the 16th century and was first mentioned in a document in 1254, was located in the vicinity of the castle .
